Winning the game of Health Insurance

What we’d most want our friends and loved ones to know

Most of us are unaccustomed to understanding our health insurance, how to estimate our anticipated out of pocket expenses, and how to shop the best polices for ourselves and our families. For those who have employer-sponsored health insurance, we shouldn’t assume that it is the best option available to us. With a modest effort we can understand what our options are and not only choose what works best for us, but also understand how to avoid the pitfalls of excluded benefits and out of network physicians later.

How we might help

The goal of this section is to help you understand the basics of health insurance so that you can assess for yourself how your existing insurance fits you and your family’s needs, compare alternative plans, and determine and whether you might have a better alternative for your next enrollment period or at some point in the future. At the end of this chapter, you will be able to forecast your most likely total costs for the coming year based on your existing policy, past patterns of use of healthcare services, and your best estimate of any changes for the coming year. You will also understand your maximum out of pocket exposure under your existing policy.

Next, you’ll be able to compare alternative healthcare insurance policies based on total forecasted costs, benefits, networks of providers, and maximum out of pocket exposure so you can make an informed decision about keeping your existing policy or switching to another that better suits you and your family. Finally, you will understand some of the pitfalls of health insurance, and how to avoid unnecessary out of pocket expenses.

Remember:  We coach, support, educate, and empower.  We illuminate options you may not have known you had.  But we don't decide what's right for you in your unique circumstances; only you can do that.  And we don't provide medical, financial, or legal advice; nor do we replace the valuable counsel of those who do.
