Who are the players in the wellness and sick care games, and how do they play?
What we’d most want our friends and loved ones to know
There are many players in the game whose existence and profitability is based on us being unhealthy or overspending on our sick care. This includes the processed food industry, the pharmaceutical industry, the medical device industry, hospitals, and specialty physicians. Further, health insurance companies and employers are usually financially motivated to spend as little as possible on our care, even when we need it most. We should not assume that the best interests of the other players are aligned with ours.
We will often find that particular doctors, nurses, and other caregivers can consciously demonstrate benevolent behavior by subordinating their interests to ours. But we should not assume that the institutions they work for will allow patterns of behavior that sacrifice the institution’s best interests to our own. Historically, individuals and families have had little to no information on which to base their collaboration in their own consumption decisions. The other players have had all of the information. That situation has often resulted in behaviors and decisions that benefit other players at the expense of our health, quality of life, and pocketbook.
Of all the other players, primary care physicians are most likely to demonstrate consistent behaviors aligned with our best interests. But they usually do so at their own expense in terms of un-reimbursed time spent, or sacrificed revenue from a reduction in the over use of tests and procedures.
“How many businesses do you know that want to cut their revenue in half? That’s why the healthcare system won’t change the healthcare system.”
Rick Scott, Governor of Florida
If you understand what the game looks like from the perspective of the other players, you can better look out for your own and your family’s best interests. And you will also understand that the processed food, pharma, and medical device industries specifically are spending enormous amounts of money on lobbying, marketing, and ‘education’ to increase our consumption and avoid or delay changes that reduce their profitability.
How we might help
We’d like to help you understand who the significant players are in the games of health, wellness, and sick care; what their self interests are; and what motivates them to behave the way they do. At the end of this section, you will understand how the other players self interests either align with or conflict with your own, and how you can be empowered to win by either collaborating with them or getting them to play by your rules so you receive high value care.
